Hagios is holy

agios

Hagios is the word used in the New Testament to mean holy. The New Testament doesn’t speak much about God being holy, but it does talk about God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit.  Hagios can mean set apart, holy, or sacred.  I think of the song by Brian Doerksen called Refiner’s Fire.

Refiner’s Fire   by Brian Doerksen

Purify my heart, Let me be as gold and precious silver

Purify my heart, Let me be as gold, pure gold

Refiner’s fire,  My heart’s one desire

Is to be holy, Set apart for You, Lord

I choose to be holy, Set apart for You, my Master

Ready to do your will

Purify my heart, Cleanse me from within, and make me holy

Purify my heart, Cleanse me from my sin, Deep within

So what does it mean to be holy?  What does it mean for God to be holy?  I will do my best here.  God is totally set apart from man.  No one can compare to Him.  He is set apart from evil.  He is pure.  He is perfect, the only perfect One.  Isaiah tells that he “saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.”  He continues, “And they (seraphs) were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.'” Isaiah then cries, “Woe to me!  I am ruined!  For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”  (Isaiah 6:1-5)  To think about the perfect God seeing us in all of our imperfectness, is humbling.  We don’t even like to think about other imperfect people knowing about all of our imperfections.

What does it mean for us to be holy?  We instinctively know that we cannot, on our own, be holy like God is holy.  Before God calls us to be His own, we are slaves to our sinful nature.  But through a believing relationship with Jesus, we are called holy.  Jesus Christ died for our sins, so when we confess our sins God cleanses us.  We are made holy.  Hebrews 10:10 follows: “We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”  Then the Holy Spirit works in us and through us with the fruits of the Spirit to be more like the perfect God who is perfect in all these fruits.  Only He has perfect love, perfect joy, perfect peace, etc.

About one quarter of the more than 200 verses using hagios in the New Testament translate hagios as saints.  The Latin word for holy is sanctus, which is where saints comes from.  Just think of a saint as a holy person and the translation makes sense.  The holy people of God are considered saints.

Verses:

Matthew 4:5 NIV  Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
