Onoma is name

Onoma is Greek for name, character, or reputation.  I’m going to quote Helps Word-studies here: Name is “the manifestation or revelation of someone’s character, i.e. as distinguishing them from all others.”  (Helps Word-studies at biblehub.com).  Think of the word anonymous–without any name.

God told Mary to give her son the name Yeshua, which translates to Jesus in Greek, having the meaning “God saves” or “savior” or “Yahweh is salvation”.  So Jesus’ name reflects his purpose.  In Hebrew times, parents carefully selected names for their children.  A person’s name was supposed to reflect the person.  Sometimes people would change their name to reflect a change in their person.  A few Old Testament examples would be Naomi (Mara),  Abram (Abraham), or Jacob (Israel).

God gave Jesus the name above all names.  Philippians 2:9-11, NASB: For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In Revelation 19:11, Jesus is on a white horse and he is called Faithful and True.  In verse 12 it says that “He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.”  In verse 13, “His name is called The Word of God.”  And in verse 16, “And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.”

So in my limited understanding, Jesus is His name.  His name(s) reflect what He is, his essence.  As long as we are on earth, we can never fully understand or know the full meaning of Him or His names.  We, over time, come to understand more and more as it is revealed to us, but never all.  May God help us (me) to keep seeking and understanding.

In the New Testament, onoma is found 228 times (according to Strong’s).  It is used for the names of men, the name of God, and the name of Jesus.
