Manthano is I learn

There is always something new in this life that you can learn.  The world is full of information on a variety of different subjects.  Even though you may have read the Bible every year for years, you can still learn something new every time you read it.

Manthano is the Greek word that means I learn.  It is found 25 times in the New Testament (Strong’s).  There is also a form of manthano, katamanthano which is found one time in the New Testament.  Katamanthano means to understand or consider carefully (Strong’s).  It is found in Matthew 6:28, “Consider how the lilies of the field grow…”.  The NASB uses ‘observe’ and the NIV translates it as ‘see’.

In 2 Timothy 3:7, it talks about ‘always learning, but never coming to a knowledge of the truth’.  That’s very sad: learning, learning, and learning, but never really learning.  I hope I’m never that person.  I don’t want to seek knowledge just for the sake of gaining more knowledge.  I want to learn something useful while I’m doing it, hopefully learning for the better.

Verses:

Matthew 9:13 NIV  But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’  For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Matthew 11:29 ESV  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

John 6:45 KJV  It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God.  Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

John 7:15 NASB  The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”

Romans 16:17 ESV  I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.

1 Corinthians 4:6 NASB  Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.

Philippians 4:9 NIV  Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice.  And the God of peace will be with you.

1 Timothy 5:4 KJV  But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to show piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

2 Timothy 3:6-7 NIV They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 3:14 ESV  But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it.

Titus 3:14 NASB  Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.

Hebrews 5:8 KJV  Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

Revelation 14:3 NIV  And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders.  No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

The G/K number for manthano is 3443.

The Strong’s number for manthano is 3129.
