Basileus is king

BasileusThere are and have been many kings on this earth.  Some have had much more power than others.  The word for king in ancient Greek is basileus.  Basileus can mean leader of the people, prince, commander, lord of the land, or king. In the New Testament, there is mention of King Herod, King David, King Agrippa, kings of the earth, the Messiah-King of the Jews, God as the King of the ages, and the King of kings.  A form of basileus is used more than 100 times in the New Testament.

Matthew 1:6  NIV  And Jesse the father of King David.  David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife.

Matthew 2:1-3 NIV  After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?  We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”  When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Acts 26:19 NIV  “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.”  (Paul speaking)

Acts 13:21-22 NIV  Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.  After removing Saul, he made David their king.  God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

Acts 4:26 NIV  The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

John 1:49 NIV  Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”

Matthew 27:37 ESV  And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

Luke 23:37 NIV  and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

John 18:37 NIV  “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.  Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king.  In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.  Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

1 Timothy 1:17  ESV  To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.  (Some versions say King of the ages, some say King eternal.)

1 Timothy 6:15 NIV  which God will bring about in his own time–God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.

Revelation 9:11 NASB  They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.

Revelation 15:3  NASB  And they sang the song of Moses, the bond-servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and marvelous are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty; Righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations!

Revelation 17:14 NIV  They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings–and with him will be his called, chosen, and faithful followers.”
